An Update with Bonus Rant

It’s been two weeks, and here I am as promised. We keep busy here at Nonlogic. We have had many new members join since my last post. Too many to list here, so check out the members link to the left. Like so many other free shell providers before us, we too have made the Draconian decision to disable IRC access all together. “Why?” I hear so many asking already. It’s a sad state in which we live. Tragedy of the Commons and all that. A very large portion of new users, after the digger rush, (digger rush = onslaught of new users due to Feesh’s story on digg.com) have been getting accounts solely to run eggdrop or psybnc. Nonlogic is meant to be a place for open source projects and original content. It is a community of coders, developers, and artists. The services provided, at cost to those who provide it, are valuable and should not be squandered which such prodigal disregard. I, for the most part, enjoy what I do here, helping out members as a fellow member and as staff. Some of the staff has caught flak from applicants for telling them they do not meet the criteria for membership. We are not elitist here. We fear that reputation greatly. But if an applicant cannot understand the rules, cannot answer a few simple questions, disrespects our all-volunteer staff, and readily admits that he or she intends to break the few simple rules we have in place, well, can we be blamed for denying them? I know encountering such people is unavoidable with an endeavor such as this one. As a result of events over the last two weeks, we have updated the tour page several times. We have added a few questions to the FAQ, Feesh made a block, and I added a simple “idiot filter.”

The application for official non-profit status has been mailed. We’ll let you know when we get official notice. That will be your cue to donate to Nonlogic like crazy! Your donations could buy us a mail server and back up server, or simply prevent Nonlogic from closing its proverbial doors.

Plume continues to be my main project and now has a forum where I detail the coding process.

The tutorials are coming along nicely. There are tutorials for basic C program, *nix file permissions, and an intro to SFTP, We are using a wiki for the tutorials now so if you are so inclined to write a tutorial for us, please go right ahead. (The menu link will be updated soon, until then check out the tutorials here.

I want a chance for some of the digital art skills in the Nonlogic community to shine through in a single unified form — and that form is Nonlogic propaganda. Help Nonlogic take over the world by creating and using a Nonlogic wallpaper. Check the link on the second from bottom link on the main menu.

The Java IRC client has been moved to fit in better with the main page. Same java program, different page. http://www.nonlogic.org/irc/app.html

Snake is running an internet radio station. Check the site at http://snake.nonlogic.org/ Nobody complain yet. He is borderline with the rules, but for now we’re grooving with it.

Illicium wanted me to mention his project “icg” which is an AJAX powered webcomic creator. I have played with it myself and give it my stamp of “damn that’s cool.” Illicium seems to have shuffled some files around and the demo I played with is no longer available. I’ll be sure to link to it as soon as a working page is up again.

I keep telling people if they want their web site or project explicitly mention in a post to tell me. The best way to notify me is via email to zashi [ at ] nonlogic , org. The second best way is to yell at me in the IRC channel.
