We need a new server!

OK, so… shadowarts, pmhaddad, and I went to the data center last Friday on the 14th. We wanted to put in a new hard drive and reinstall Linux with the latest stable version of Debian, but things did not go our way. First, I don’t know if you heard, but the server went down for 3 days at the beginning of this month. After shadowarts desperately tried to get in touch with our host, and had no luck. He asked ##nonlogic to send an e-mail to them to get their attention. And it worked great! They called us back immediately, and we got the server up and running again.

Anyways, we arrived at the data center and the owner confronted shadowarts about what happened. He wasn’t happy, at all. Apparently, he got around 150 e-mails (some of our more enthusiastic users decided to spam them), and many we’re not professional ;). Then, he tried to shift the blame on us for their lack of response. But our hero shadowarts didn’t back down, and basically told the guy off. It was awesome.

Finally, we got access to our server, and we had forgotten how old and makeshift our server was. Just take a look at this photo. Yes, the heatsink is strapped down with wire. After we installed the new hard drive, the computer wouldn’t boot up. We were beginning to worry because we were starving, and only had a few hours. Then, we remembered the server is a little temperamental, and it will boot up by itself when it feels like it. So we waited for it to boot, and then for whatever reason, we couldn’t get Debian Etch to install. Time for lunch, I guess…

So help us get a new server by donating! We’re going to dedicated the new server in the memory of our user Jesse Malthus. Take a look at the specs for the new server, feel free to edit them. We’re also looking for another host to co-locate our server after that incident.
